US Open beckons for Lee-Anne Pace

MOSSEL Bay’s Lee-Anne Pace will make her debut at the US Open when it tees off at The Broadmoor East Course in Colorado on July 7.
Designed by Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones, Sr, it will be the seventh championship the USGA has staged at The Broadmoor.
Sally Little, a winner of two major titles in her time, had two runner-up finishes, in 1978 and 1986.

Lee-Anne would love nothing better than to win at her first attempt. Tough, but not impossible.
After incurring a bout of ’flu at the recent Finnair Masters in Helsinki last week, where she finished tie for ninth defending her title, Lee-Anne is feeling a lot better.
“I am feeling very good about my game and confident that I will perform well. I have started hitting the ball really well, which is what you need this week,” she said.
At the moment she is working on the same things that she’s been doing for the past year and it’s paying off.
“I have gained distance and accuracy. I am trying to give myself more space through the ball,” she explained.
Her best finish in a major is 22nd, at last year’s British Open. She seems to be peaking at the right time and there’s every chance she’ll improve on that.
“There’s a bit more pressure as doing well in any major is always great for your career and also confidence. You have to be at your best performance at majors as they set up the courses long and tough,” she said.
She said the course is long and not like anything in South Africa. “It’s 7 000 yards and with deep rough and very slick greens, so it makes it quite a challenge,” she said.
Lee-Anne will be playing with Canadian amateur Jennifer Kirby and South Korean Mi-Jeong Jeon in rounds one and two.
“I am looking forward to playing this week and am proud to represent South Africa.”

Golf Club of the Month

The Mossel Bay golf course signature hole is the 17th hole, which is a par 5. At 494m and stroke 2, this can be challenging especially when playing into the sea breeze.
